Florida Fish and Wildlife is seeking a strategic leader to serve as Assistant Regional Biologist in Ocala, overseeing Wildlife and Habitat Management operations across 10 counties. This high-impact role manages wildlife conservation programs across over 1 million acres, advancing restoration, public use, and interagency coordination.
Description
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) envisions a Florida where fish and wildlife are abundant and thriving in connected natural landscapes. As Assistant Regional Biologist, you’ll support the Wildlife and Habitat Management section in planning and executing conservation strategies, supervising staff, and collaborating with landowners and partner agencies. The position will significantly shape wildlife and public use management on numerous WMA/WEA sites across the Northeast Region.
Responsibilities
• Assist in regional planning, Federal Aid reporting, and inter-agency coordination
• Supervise three Biological Administrators and OPS staff
• Develop and monitor regional budgets
• Oversee habitat restoration and enhancement projects
• Evaluate and prescribe land management practices, including prescribed burns
• Analyze wildlife populations and recommend regulatory changes
• Coordinate public use and recreational planning across management areas
• Contribute to acquisition reviews and long-term ecological strategies
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field
• 7 years of relevant professional experience (a bachelor’s degree may substitute for 4 years)
• Strong land and wildlife management knowledge
• Administrative, organizational, and personnel leadership skills
• Valid Florida Driver’s License
• Successful Level 2 background check
• Willingness to file annual Statement of Financial Interest
Preferred Qualifications
• Florida Certified Burn Manager’s Certificate
• Familiarity with Florida procurement procedures
• Experience with GIS, restoration planning, and habitat assessment
• Background in supervising multidisciplinary field teams
Additional Notes
This is not an entry-level role. Travel, overnight fieldwork, and weekend hours may be required. This position plays a central role in the management of Florida’s public conservation lands and will directly influence strategic conservation across the region.
