About the position
The Full-Time Natural Resource Specialist performs essential work within the Natural Resource Division of the BREC Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge. This role involves daily maintenance of hiking trails and green infrastructure, ensuring that these areas are safe and accessible for the public. The specialist will assist in the planting of new green infrastructure amenities, such as rain gardens and bioswales, and will be responsible for building trail structures that align with the park's goals. This position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including overseeing contract workers and volunteers, and coordinating efforts with other departments within BREC and external partners. In addition to maintenance and planting duties, the Natural Resource Specialist will be involved in ecological data collection and analysis, contributing to the overall health and sustainability of the park's natural resources. The role demands a strong understanding of South Louisiana ecosystems, as well as the care and cultivation of trees and shrubs. The specialist will also be expected to apply knowledge of sustainable trail design and maintenance practices to enhance the park's infrastructure. The position requires effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to ensure clear instructions are followed and to foster positive relationships with volunteers, coworkers, and the general public. The ability to navigate using maps, compasses, and GPS technology is essential, as is the capability to operate various tools and equipment necessary for trail and garden maintenance. Responsibilities

• Operate BREC vehicles and off-road vehicles as needed.
Requirements
• Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university in Natural Resources, Conservation Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, Botany, or a closely related field.

• First Aid and CPR/AED Certification within 30 days of hire.

• Valid LA Driver's License.
,
• 1 year of related volunteer, internship, or work experience.
Nice-to-haves
• Nationally Recognized Sawyer Training Certification.
