Job Description

The Wilderness Society is hiring a NSW Forests Campaigner to protect ecosystems and empower communities against deforestation. The role involves creating campaigns, engaging with First Nations communities, and influencing decision-makers. Candidates should be passionate, organized, and skilled in communication and relationship-building. The position offers flexibility in working hours and location, with support for remote work, alongside benefits like annual leave and professional development opportunities.
ABOUT THE WILDERNESS SOCIETY

The Wilderness Society is working for a future that does not rely on continued destruction of nature and our climate, but rather flourishes because of our responsible stewardship of these core life support systems. We value organisational independence and integrity.

Be part of a team that’s secured some of the biggest wins for Australian wilderness and nature: stopping the damming of the Franklin River nearly fifty years ago, keeping big oil out of the Great Australian Bight, or defending special forests the length and breadth of this continent.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As the NSW Forests Campaigner, you'll work to protect irreplaceable ecosystems and empower communities to challenge those who prioritise profit over the planet. This role involves collaborating with diverse communities to create powerful campaigns that target both specific forest threats and the root causes of deforestation. You'll collaborate with departments across the organisation, mobilise communities, and engage directly with decision-makers to secure lasting protection for NSW's forests.

You'll contribute to both on-the-ground, place-based campaigns defending specific forests from logging, and broader, systems-level campaigns that tackle the government policies and corporate practices driving deforestation. This includes engaging with First Nations communities, building powerful alliances, conducting research, and directly influencing decision-makers in government and the corporate world to achieve lasting change.

ABOUT YOU
• You're passionate about protecting NSW's forests and deeply committed to The Wilderness Society's mission.
• You have demonstrated a strong understanding of campaigning, strategy, and power dynamics.
• You have experience in working with First Nations and organisations.
• You have excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal).
• You're self-motivated, highly organised, and can effectively manage your workload.
• You have a knack for building strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
• You're adaptable, see opportunities, and are driven to achieve impactful results.
• You may have several years of relevant experience, or a combination of skills and lived experience, that makes you a great fit.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
• Five weeks of annual leave per year
• Genuine flexibility in working hours and location, with support for office and/or remote working
• 15 days personal leave
• 3 additional leave days at end of year
• Floating public holidays
• Generous Paid parental leave (subject to eligibility conditions)
• Commitment to supporting your professional development
• Access to Long Service Leave after five years of continuous service
• Access to our Employee Assistance Program (free counselling)
• Regular 1:1 meetings for coaching and management support
• Performance conversations for reflections and growth
• When you start, a co-developed initial 3 month work plan

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT

Our approach to diversity is about embracing everyone. From building a culture where you can bring your best self to work, to deploying initiatives that support the different needs of our staff, we are proud to be part of building an inclusive world for all. If you identify as a First Nations person, a woman, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, a person with a disability, a person of colour, or if you are from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, we strongly encourage you to apply.

All qualified applicants will be considered regardless of race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status. We're committed to reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process for applicants with disabilities; please let us know if you require any.

We are conducting interviews on a rolling basis, so please apply as soon as possible.

A position description is attached.

Applicants must have the right to live and work in Australia to be considered for the role.
