Position Overview

CASE seeks a Marine Ecologist to support NEFSC’s efforts in analyzing and synthesizing data on protected species. The role focuses on identifying trends in distribution, abundance, and human interactions using complex datasets from various sources, including surveys, acoustic recordings, and satellite imagery.

Location: Remote/Woods Hole, MA, or other Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) locations

Key Responsibilities
• Analyze visual, acoustic, and environmental data to estimate species abundance and trends.
• Develop spatial models and simulations to assess ecological relationships.
• Utilize AI/ML tools to analyze bycatch and other human impacts.
• Create and maintain databases and analytical tools.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s (BS), Master’s (MS), or Doctorate (PhD) in an environmental science-related field.
• Proficiency in statistical programming (R, Python, MATLAB).
• Experience with Bayesian models, species distribution models, or AI/ML.
• Strong project management and communication skills.

Preferred Skills
• Deep understanding of species and ecosystems along the northern US continental shelf.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations and policies related to threatened and endangered species (ESA, MMPA, NEPA).
• Experience working in interdisciplinary teams or contributing to collaborative research projects.
• Proven track record of publications or contributions to peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Work Schedule And Requirements

This is a full time role, fully remote, working with the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC).
