As a Crew Leader, you will manage logistics and specific tasks regarding the maintenance and production of plant material at the City-owned Old Man Creek Nursery. In this role, you will lead a crew of skilled staff, including gardeners, nursery workers, equipment operators, and labourers to perform a variety of nursery tasks safely. Your work at the nursery will contribute to the City’s Urban Forest and horticultural assets.
A key responsibility for this role is to act as the central point of contact for yard security, operations, yard and equipment maintenance, site safety and environmental compliance, and visitors to the Nursery site.

What will you do?
• Instruct, lead, participate, and facilitate the work of staff (Gardeners, Nursery Workers, Equipment Operators, and Labourers) performing maintenance and production of trees, shrubs, and grasses.
• Ensure daily tasks are done safely and in alignment with the operational work plan.
• Oversee daily shipping and receiving of balled and burlap trees and naturalization plant material.
• Oversee staff performing a variety of tasks including: propagation of plant material in a greenhouse setting, planting of potted and bare root trees, tree maintenance (watering, pruning, etc.), weed control, inventory of naturalization plant material, inventory of balled and burlap trees, fence installation, rototilling, augering, loading and unloading of plant material to and from semi trucks, 2 tons, or tandem dump trucks and trailers.
• Ensure crews are conducting work safely and in alignment with Ground Disturbance requirements (locates and ground disturbance permitting, reviewing exposed utility lines).
• Manage the fleet and facilities of the Nursery site and ensure all inspection and maintenance standards are followed.
• Train and educate crew members in assigned functional areas.
• Address customer and stakeholder needs as related to service delivery in a professional manner.
• Ensure work tracking for all tasks is correct and up to date, including inspection of completed work.
• Make day-to-day decisions relating to work crews which could include: monitoring and evaluating attendance, performance of crew members, and identifying discipline issues.
• Other related duties as required.

Qualifications:
• Minimum 2-year post-secondary diploma in Forestry or Horticulture or in a related field or Journeyman Horticulture.
• 3 years of progressively responsible experience in Forestry Tree Care Operations or Nursery plant material production and care.
• Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.

Assets:
• International Society of Arboriculture ISA Arborist Certification.
• Current Emergency First Aid certificate.
• Valid Ground Disturbance Level 2 training.

Skills required for success:
• Knowledge of transportation of dangerous goods and truck routes.
• Experience in equipment operation and load securement.
• Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability.
• Ability to manage work within work plan constraints and expectations.
• Ability to provide excellent customer service.
• Proven time management, organizational, and leadership skills.
• Computer proficiency (Google Suite, mapping understanding (using ArcGIS, Tree Keeper or Google Maps), email writing, spreadsheet use and manipulation, SAP).

Conditions of Employment:
• Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position.
• Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position.
• Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position.
