Maintenance Technician I - Stormwater Green Infrastructure

The City of Roanoke, Virginia is hiring a Maintenance Technician I for Stormwater Green Infrastructure. The City of Roanoke is seeking a Green Infrastructure Technician to help maintain our city’s flood lots, stormwater facilities, and public spaces. This role offers a great opportunity to build a career in public works while preserving and improving Roanoke’s green infrastructure.
What You’ll Do:
• Operate Ventrac and other commercial mowing equipment to maintain City flood lots, stormwater best management practices (BMPs), and public landscapes.
• Perform stormwater construction maintenance, including grading, seeding, sodding, mulching, aeration, and general site improvements.
• Repair and renovate stormwater management facilities to ensure proper function and aesthetics.
• Conduct minor repairs and servicing on equipment to keep machinery in top condition.
• Operate heavy and light equipment for tasks such as mowing, grading, and material handling.
• Support snow removal, special events, and emergency response efforts, including some nights and weekends.
• Maintain accurate records, including log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip inspections.
• Obtain required certifications, including Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator and Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement (must be acquired within 12 months of hire).

What We’re Looking For:
• High school diploma or GED and 1-3 years of experience in landscaping, stormwater management, construction, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
• Experience operating heavy and light motorized equipment for landscaping or construction projects.
• A strong work ethic and commitment to environmental stewardship.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Willingness to obtain necessary certifications and grow within the role.
