About the position

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Operator for the Specialty Crew in Bowling Green. This role is essential in serving the citizens of the Commonwealth and the traveling public by ensuring the safety and efficiency of the transportation system. The Maintenance Operator will be responsible for operating various power tools and heavy equipment, including chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, motor graders, and tractors with attachments. The position requires a commitment to manual labor and the ability to respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events, particularly for snow and ice removal and other hazardous road conditions. As a Maintenance Operator, you will participate in work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control. It is crucial to demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, identify workplace safety hazards, and maintain knowledge of safety rules and regulations. The role involves working as part of a team to perform manual labor tasks such as forming and finishing concrete, installing pipes and precast structures, conducting dewatering operations, finish grading, clearing drainage, and pothole patching. Additionally, you will be responsible for completing pre-trip inspections, performing preventive maintenance, and safely operating power tools and heavy equipment. VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is integral to that mission. Therefore, the Maintenance Operator will be required to work outside of normal hours during emergency operations, including weekends and holidays when necessary. Responsibilities
• Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events for snow and ice removal and hazardous road conditions.

• Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control.

• Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques and identify workplace safety hazards.

• Participate as a working team member performing manual labor tasks such as forming and finishing concrete, pipe installation, and pothole patching.

• Complete pre-trip inspections and perform preventive maintenance on equipment.

• Operate power tools and light to heavy equipment safely.

Requirements
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

• Ability to obtain a CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.

• Ability to perform safe and skilled operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance.
