Job Description
Connecticut Children's is hiring an Environmental Services Technician for a 40-hour position in Hartford, CT. The role involves maintaining cleanliness in the operating room, following AORN guidelines, assisting with patient transport, and ensuring a sanitary environment. Candidates should have a high school diploma, customer service skills, and preferably experience in a healthcare setting. Physical demands include standing, lifting, and working with chemicals.
Job Description
Under the direct supervision of the RN and Nurse Manager, this position is designed to enhance the flow of the operating room. Ensures that rooms are cleaned in a timely and complete manner between cases. Keeps assigned areas clean, sanitary and aseptic. The OR EVS Tech is trained to perform certain activities which include: cleaning of physical environment in surgical department, storing supplies and maintaining the operating room in a clean, orderly condition.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Follows specific procedure to perform between case cleaning of OR rooms in accordance with AORN guidelines
• Dusts all surfaces that collect dust, removes all trash from area and cleans all furniture and metal fixtures.
• Maintains equipment for cleanliness and cleans work cart and restocks as needed. Reports any repairs that need to be done. Changes mop buckets as specified by Infection control standards.
• Responsible for assisting with patient transport and positioning as needed.
• Responsible to keep dirty utility room clean and organized.
• Ensures all OR floors and interior walkways and common areas are clean, serviceable and maintained in a timely manner.
• Moves furniture and other objects as needed in order to ensure adequate cleaning.
• Performs other duties as may be assigned.
• Orients and mentors new staff members.
• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

• Meets annual requirements for mandatory education.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice.
• Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and co-workers.
• Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are practices and adheres to the Code of Conduct philosophy.
• Promotes positive and collaborative atmosphere with all members of the healthcare team.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum of one year housekeeping experience in a healthcare/Operating room setting preferred.
• Physical demands/working conditions.
• Physical requirements include constant standing/walking, twisting, pushing/pulling, using arm, leg and back muscles, smelling, vision, hearing, color vision, finger dexterity and working with hot, cold or wet surroundings. Frequent bending/stooping, lifting 50 pounds and working with or near chemicals and bioburden. Occasionally sitting, climbing and using hand tools or power tools.
• Minimum of one year housekeeping experience in a healthcare/Operating room setting.
Education and/or Experience Preferred:
• Vocational/technical training preferred.
License and/or Certification Required:
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR in adult, child & infant is required upon hire and maintained.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of:
• Basic medical terminology preferred.
• Basic math and measurements.
• Basic understanding of organization’s environment of care and infection control policies and procedures.
Skilled at:
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to:
• Effectively communicate both orally and in writing in English demonstrating a command of basic grammar and spelling is required; ability to communicate Bilingually (Spanish/English) is preferred.
• Understand and follow specific written and verbal instructions and procedures.
• Learn and demonstrate competency in standard clinical procedures within specialty area, according to established protocols.
• Maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
• Learn and follow established protocols in order to initiate appropriate action in emergency/crisis situations
• Learn and demonstrate competency in basic data entry/data retrieval in electronic patient records and/or patient supply systems utilized on unit.
