The Office of Sustainability at the University of Montana facilitates and supports a campus culture of environmental stewardship in keeping with the mission of inclusive prosperity and ‘resourceful stewardship of the land that sustains us.’ Working with partners across campus, we aim to improve our students’ literacy of sustainability issues and proactively develop policies and initiatives that bring us closer to that goal. The goal of this specific project is to address food insecurity at the University of Montana, in addition to implementing initiatives to reduce waste from research labs, and residence halls. Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a coalition of colleges and universities dedicated to fostering civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across Montana. Led by CEOs from participating institutions, MCNCE works to improve community life and educate students on civic and social responsibility, preparing them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged leaders.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will add capacity to the Office of Sustainability (OoS) at the University of Montana by building relationships, systems, data collection tools, processes, and documentation that aid program goals of addressing the environmental footprint of the campus, engaging students, and building a culture of sustainability across all areas and operations. The VISTA will build UM’s capacity to feed food insecure students who are served by ASUM Bear Necessities, the food pantry and resource center. The project aims to address the cycle of poverty, by specifically addressing food insecurity, which can prevent these students from finishing their degree. By working closely with the food pantry staff and our UM catering team, the VISTA will measure, package, and redistribute food that would otherwise go to waste.
