As part of our Geography subject group in the School of Social Sciences, you will have the opportunity to engage in teaching and research, and to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in your field.

As Lecturer in Physical and Environmental Geography, you will be teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate courses – with a particular focus on physical geography and environmental science modules and field teaching in the BSc Environment and Sustainability, BSc Geography, MSc Environment and Sustainability and MSc Climate Change. You will also contribute to shaping our exciting new curriculum and our vibrant research culture and environment, which includes the Birkbeck Research Centre for Environment and Sustainability.

As a Lecturer, you will:
• Teach and inspire students across various settings, from small tutorials to large lectures, seminars, laboratories and field trips
• Develop and deliver engaging teaching materials and methods, and convene modules
• Supervise student projects and provide academic guidance
• Engage in research activities and contribute to the school's research objectives
• Participate in outreach and engagement activities
• Contribute to School administration and management.

Candidates are expected to have:
• A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field
• Strong research skills and the ability to attract funding
• Effective communication and presentation skills
• Experience in teaching and leading modules at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
• A commitment to diversity and the ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds.

We would particularly welcome applicants with subject specialisms in Physical and Environmental geography who have experience of programme leadership, and who come from under-represented groups in academia.

Contract

This role is offered on an open-ended basis.

This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week which includes delivering teaching in the evening.

Interviews will be held on 28 May 2025.

Salary and benefits

The Lecturer grade of the College's London Pay Scale which is £43,265 rising to £59,454 per annum.

Birkbeck offers a competitive salary and pension scheme, 31 days paid leave, flexible working arrangements and some of the most generous benefits in the HE sector, all while being located right in the heart of Central London.

The salary quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
