Job Description

The South Florida Water Management District seeks a Lead Environmental Scientist in West Palm Beach, FL, to assess water quality impacts on restoration projects. The role involves leading monitoring assessments, developing advanced methods for environmental challenges, and mentoring junior scientists. Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and at least 8 years of experience. This position requires in-person support during emergencies.
The Water Quality Bureau’s Compliance Assessment and Reporting Section is looking for a skilled Lead Scientist to assess water quality impacts on restoration projects. This role requires a proven ability to navigate high-stakes situations and use innovative techniques to solve challenging problems.

The Lead Scientist will work independently and collaboratively, providing technical expertise on complex water quality issues and multi-agency presentations. If you're a results-driven scientist with leadership experience, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead multi-phase monitoring and assessment appraisals to determine water quality improvements as the District subject matter expert for mercury and other toxicants.
• Develop and apply advanced methods to tackle complex environmental challenges.
• Develop plans and standards for reporting on mercury and other toxicants.
• Advise leadership and regulatory agencies through presentations and reports.
• Mentor and guide junior scientists, promoting teamwork and technical excellence.
• Participate in taskforces and committees to drive scientific goals.
• Support emergency management efforts during storms and emergencies.

Required Qualifications
• Master’s Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 8+ years of relevant experience.
• Training or background in fisheries, wildlife ecology, water quality, biogeochemistry or a closely related field.
• Experience in heavy metals/toxicology.
• Expertise in advanced scientific methods and problem-solving.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience in reporting to stakeholders.
• Proven leadership abilities, with a focus on mentoring and team collaboration.
• Ability to work independently and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.
