Summary Statement

An incumbent is involved in landscaping and grounds maintenance activities at the lead level overseeing and participating in the upkeep and beautification of campus grounds.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent in this class typically reports to a Landscape/Horticulture Superintendent and is responsible for overseeing and participating in planting, transplanting, cultivating, and maintenance of flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns. Concurrently, an incumbent provides landscape design of new planting areas and renovation of old areas; oversees greenhouse operations involving supply inventory, seeding, propagation, transplanting, insect and disease control, and fertilizing to ensure adequate bedding and plant supplies for use in campus display areas; and engages in special projects. Significant aspects of work in this class includes serving at the lead level, performing miscellaneous grounds duties and equipment upkeep and maintenance. An incumbent may address groups and give educational presentations when required.

Principal Accountabilities

An incumbent may perform any combination of the below listed accountabilities:

1. Oversees and participates in grounds activities involving sequential planting, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, spraying, mowing, trimming, and selecting varieties best suited to growing conditions, of flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns.

2. Trains ground personnel in caretaking techniques and oversees work.

3. Oversees and participates in checking for and controlling insects and plant diseases, and mixing of chemicals for spraying.

4. Oversees and participates in the operation and maintenance of equipment, such as tractors, mowers, sprayers, trimmers, and edgers.

5. Oversees and assists in providing landscape designs of new planting areas and renovation of old areas.

6. Oversees and participates in greenhouse operations to ensure adequate bedding and plant supplies for use in display areas.

7. Oversees and participates in snow and ice removal, turf control, and litter removal.

8. Sets up for special events, e.g. chairs, tables, and other equipment as assigned.

9. Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of advanced horticulture principles and practices and their application.
Knowledge of landscape design, soils, and plant materials.
Knowledge of proper handling and mixing of spray materials.
Knowledge of safe and efficient operation of groundskeeping tools and equipment.
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance and landscaping.
Knowledge of horticulture principles and practices, and their application.
Skill in performing technical work in landscape maintenance and beautification.
Skill in assigning and overseeing the work of subordinate personnel.
Ability to prepare routine reports and keep simple records.
Ability to operate, repair, and maintain a variety of grounds equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma and two (2) years relevant experience; or other equivalent combination of education and experience.
