About the position
The Laboratory Technician for Environmental, Health and Safety at Florida International University (FIU) plays a crucial role in supporting lab safety programs, including waste management and equipment maintenance. This position involves technical support for hazardous waste management, conducting compliance inspections, and assisting with emergency preparedness. The technician will also coordinate vendor access, manage safety equipment, and support various environmental health and safety projects.
Responsibilities
• Provide overall support to Lab Safety Programs including waste management and equipment.
,
• Provide technical support for the Hazardous Waste Management program under the supervision of the Chemical Safety Officer.
,
• Coordinate and conduct weekly and monthly waste compliance inspections and waste pick-up for all campuses.
,
• Coordinate, grant access, and accompany vendors servicing equipment on the FIU premises.
,
• Conduct annual inspections of eyewash/safety showers with assistance from temporary employees.
,
• Serve as the point of contact for users and Facilities Management regarding eyewash/safety shower equipment operations concerns.
,
• Assist with the Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Lab Emergency Signage Program and annual lab safety compliance inspections.
,
• Provide technical support for the Chemical Safety officer and related programs.
,
• Assist with preparation of regulatory reports and provide administrative support during regulatory agency inspections.
,
• Order lab safety equipment, personal protective equipment, and supplies as needed for the Lab Safety Unit.

• Provide additional support on special EH&S projects as directed by the EH&S Assistant Director.
,
• Perform essential duties in emergencies such as hurricanes and public health emergencies.
Requirements
• High school diploma and two (2) years of appropriate experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

• Knowledge of hazardous chemicals, waste, and general safety.
