Overview

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory/Technical Assistant Seasonal for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position serves as a technical research assistant for at least two projects led by the Maslo Lab within the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:
• Conducts field surveys, data collection, and data entry for two studies examining: 1) the spatial ecology of eastern copperhead snakes in New Jersey; and 2) effects of solar panel construction on grassland bird and pine snake habitat use.
• Tasks expected to be performed include, but may not be limited to: 1) search, identification and capture of wild snakes; 2) telemetry of radio-transmittered study animals; 3) search and identification of grassland birds and nests, with a focus on grasshopper sparrows; 4) collect of data relevant to habitat selection and behavior; and 4) entry of field-collected data.
• Assists members of the Maslo lab in other projects, as needed.
• Works with co-investigators to generate reports, maps, and other technical documents.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests, or other technical work may be substituted for the degree.

Certifications/Licenses
• A valid driver’s license would be required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications
• Strong bird identification skills, particularly in grassland environments.
• Demonstrated success in conducting ecological field.
• At least 2 years of undergraduate education in ecology, wildlife biology, natural resources management, or equivalent; demonstrated experience conducting field work and collecting data
