The University of California Davis is hiring a Jr. Specialist for the Bodega Marine Laboratory, focusing on research in ocean climate. Jr. Specialist at Bodega Marine Laboratory: Hill Ocean Climate Laboratory
Position Overview:
A reasonable estimate for this position is $25.44 at Step 1
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
The position is 50% for 10 months and is located at UC Davis' Bodega Marine Laboratory. This position will have laboratory and field duties under the supervision of Professor Hill.
Duties of this position include:
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (80% EFFORT)
1) Assisting with general laboratory operations: ordering supplies, lab organization, supporting student projects, equipment calibration and maintenance, and maintaining a safe and well-organized laboratory environment. Prepare supplies for field sampling, acquire samples, work with student field assistants and develop schedules for shared use equipment. Manage laboratory safety information and training. In particular, assist and lead in the inventorying, restocking and organization of a newly renovated lab space.
2) Preparation and analysis of water samples for ocean acidification research including spectrophotometric pH analyses, and alkalinity via autotitration. Generalized knowledge and experience with the marine carbonate system is needed for daily experimental and laboratory analyses.
3) Assist in maintaining ongoing laboratory and field experiments. Fieldwork in Tomales Bay, Bodega Bay and other coastal field sites. Field work will sometimes require working under cold and wet conditions and/or during very early morning hours depending on the schedule of tides.
4) Data analysis and interpretation. Opportunities for independence and leadership in research projects. Writing and presenting on research for public and scientific audiences.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist is expected to actively support ongoing research activities for students and staff. This will include, but may not be limited to, review and editing of proposals, presentation of results at scientific conferences, and providing feedback to students and faculty on manuscripts in preparation related to their area of expertise.
The Junior Specialist will be expected to participate in and contribute to the development of an inclusive and accessible working environment for our research programs. The Jr. Specialist will also engage with the academic community at Bodega Marine Laboratory through participation in lab meetings and research seminars.
Where appropriate, the Jr. Specialist will be provided opportunities for co-authorship on published manuscripts and conference presentations.
III. University and Public Service (5% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist will contribute to University and Public Service by:
• Participating in the mentorship of undergraduates in the laboratory.
• Serving on local departmental or institute committees based upon the Jr. Specialist's areas of interest.
• Participating in lab group meetings and department and institute seminars and meetings.
Basic Qualifications:
• B.S. in Marine Science, Ecology, Geology, or a related discipline.
• Excellent communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience and understanding of the marine carbonate system. Previous experience in analyzing total alkalinity and spectrophotometric pH.
• Experience with various software programs for data management, image analysis, and reporting (i.e., Excel, graphing procedures, statistical analysis, PowerPoint).
• Careful laboratory skills and experience with microscopy.
• Experience with field research.
• Able to work well under supervision and with others.
