Job Description

Superior Bowen Asphalt Company LLC is seeking an intern for Material Environmental Research (Asphalt) in Kansas City, MO, from May to August 2025. The role involves researching sustainable materials, improving waste management, conducting environmental assessments, and performing laboratory tests. Candidates should be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and possess strong communication and organizational skills. This position is not remote and requires on-site work.

Position Description

This intern will work closely with the asphalt plant operations and support team, conducting research for areas of inefficiency. This intern will last from May to August of 2025.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Sustainable Material Research:
• Assist in research and development of eco-friendly materials, focusing on their lifecycle, recyclability, and environmental impacts.
• Participate in or lead sustainability projects, such as energy efficiency improvements, water conservation, and carbon footprint reduction efforts.
• Analyze and propose ways to reduce the environmental impact of asphalt production.
• Review and analyze environmental records to ensure adherence to permits and regulations.
• Recycling & Waste Management:
• Monitor and improve the plant's waste management processes, focusing on recycling and reducing waste generation.
• Coordinate hazardous waste disposal and compliance with waste disposal regulations.
• Collaborate on projects aimed at enhancing recycling technologies and reducing waste in the materials industry.
• Environmental Impact Assessments:
• Assist in conducting environmental impact assessments for plant expansions or new projects.
• Evaluate the potential effects on the local ecosystem and community.
• Help evaluate the environmental footprint of various materials through lifecycle analysis (LCA) and other assessment tools.
• Materials Testing & Reporting:
• Perform laboratory experiments to analyze the environmental behavior of materials, including biodegradability, emissions, and energy consumption during production.
• Prepare reports summarizing the environmental performance of the asphalt plant.
• Document progress on sustainability goals and environmental initiatives.
• Research and Benchmarking:
• Conduct research on industry best practices and emerging environmental technologies.
• Benchmark the plant's environmental performance against industry standards.
• Documentation and Record-Keeping:
• Maintain accurate records of environmental data, reports, permits, and regulatory correspondence.
• Assist in the organization and management of environmental documentation.

Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Preferred, currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Environmental Engineering, Business, or other related disciplines with an interest in construction.
• Dedication to learning, expanding knowledge, and continuous improvement.
• Interest in Quality Control.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Superior organizational and prioritization skills.
• Problem-solving, acceptance of responsibility, and work ethic.
• Valid driver's license with insurable driving record.
