Job Description

The Student Conservation Association is hiring for the Individual Placement-alaska- Cabin And Trails position in Seward, AK. The role involves supporting the Seward Ranger District's Public Use Cabins and Developed Recreation program, performing tasks such as carpentry, maintenance, and site operations. The position requires outdoor work and overnight trips. Participants must be aged 16-30 or veterans under 35, with housing provided in a bunkhouse.
Position Summary

The placements will support the Seward Ranger District’s Public Use Cabins and Developed Recreation program while working along Forest Service staff in the Chugach National Forest. Placements will be based out of Moose Pass, AK.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Work includes but is not limited to basic carpentry, sanding and staining, deep cleaning, chimney sweeping, replacing/ repairing broken items, stocking woodsheds, reporting site conditions, developed recreation site operations/maintenance on seventeen campgrounds and seven day-use sites.

Hiking, biking, ATV’ing, boating and aviation may be required to reach cabin locations. Cabin work will require overnight trips up to 10 nights duration at a time.

Marginal Duties

Placements may also assist the trails and developed recreation programs maintaining and constructing trails, cleaning outhouses, posting signage, and maintaining backcountry campsites.

Required Qualifications

Placements will need to bring a positive attitude, and willingness to work in inclement (wet) weather.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience traveling and camping in bear country.

Living Accommodations

This position is based out of the Kenai Lake Work Center in Moose Pass, AK. Moose Pass is a friendly and picturesque little town with a year-round population of about 350. It is tucked away in the mountains along the shoreline of Upper Trail Lake at Mile 29 of the Seward Highway, a National Scenic Byway.

Housing in the form of a bunkhouse will be available. All rooms are double occupancy. While dormitories may be co-ed, we generally put same sex roommates together. Dorms include use of the kitchen, living room, bathroom and laundry facilities.

Compensation

$450/week living allowance

$310/month housing allowance for USFS housing

$1300 one-time roundtrip travel allowance

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
