Job Description

The Student Conservation Association is hiring a Natural Resources Technician for a position in Devils Lake, ND, from May 11 to August 28, 2026. The role involves general maintenance of public lands, including invasive species removal and trail improvements. Participants will also assist with visitor center operations. Housing is provided, and candidates must be between 16-30 years old or veterans under 35. A valid driver's license and personal vehicle are required.
Position Summary

White Horse Hill receives over 70,000 visitors per year from nearly all fifty states and several countries. The Devils Lake Management District is responsible for eight counties in eastern North Dakota including over 200 Waterfowl Productions Areas and multiple refuges. The participant will assist with general maintenance in the management of public lands to include invasive species removal, trail improvements, mowing, sign replacement, and others.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The participant will primarily be responsible for general maintenance work including grounds and trail work through mowing and weeding, trail improvements, litter clean up, indoor and outdoor building maintenance such as painting or staining, and boundary sign posting. (60%) They will also have biotech responsibilities including invasive species removal, biological surveys, and other duties as assigned. (30%). Visitor Center operations at White Horse Hill to include public service announcements for events, answer questions and explain rules and regulations, and work with volunteers (10%).

Marginal Duties

Utilizing and gaining skills in GIS mapping, environmental education and interpretation, and paper map filing.

Required Qualifications

Valid driver's license, personal vehicle.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

some plant identification, some visitor services experience, some UTV and trailering experience.

Living Accommodations

Housing will be provided in a fully furnished on-site bunkhouse. Incumbent may be required to share a room with one other individual of the same sex. This is a ranch style house with full basement built in 2005 and later converted to a bunkhouse with 5 bedrooms and 3 baths 1 kitchen upstairs and a kitchenette in the basement. Pets are not allowed.

Compensation

Living allowance - $800/week; Relocation allowance- $1,100

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
