Job Description

The Indigenous Engagement Officer role at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water involves providing guidance on First Nations engagement in marine parks, developing Indigenous engagement plans, and promoting community involvement. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, to integrate Indigenous perspectives into marine park management. The job is based in Canberra, ACT, Australia, and is a full-time position.

The Marine and Island Parks Branch of Parks Australia works to protect, conserve and enhance the values of Commonwealth marine and island parks for the use and well-being of all Australians. We are responsible for the management of 60 AMPs, Christmas Island National Park, Pulu Keeling National Park and Norfolk Island National Park. We are passionate about the places we manage, in partnership with local communities, stakeholders, park users and other government agencies. The Job
• Provide specialist guidance and support on First Nations engagement to ensure authentic and respectful participation in marine parks
• Support the preparation and implementation of Indigenous engagement plans for the west and north network, including underpinning frameworks and guidance such as for cultural security and safety.
• Design, develop and implement strategies and programs that promote the active involvement of Indigenous communities in marine programs
• Support marine parks engagement with Traditional Owners to develop and implement park management plans.
• Work closely with government agencies, local organisations, Indigenous groups and others to ensure that Indigenous perspectives are embedded in the development and implementation of marine park management programs
• Engage and network with a broad range of stakeholders, including government agencies, research institutions, industry groups, Indigenous organisations, Traditional Owners and communities.
• Facilitate workshops, meetings, and consultations to gather input and integrate Indigenous perspectives into policy and planning processes.
• Work closely with the cultural heritage team to assist, support and inform cultural heritage documentation and management in marine parks
• Provide advice and guidance into the development of performance management frameworks for Parks Australia
• Support the integration of traditional ecological knowledge in marine management programs.
