Job Description

Mesodyne, an energy startup in Somerville, MA, is seeking a III-V Photovoltaics Engineer to develop low-bandgap InGaAs PV cells for their innovative LightCell technology. Responsibilities include designing, fabricating, and optimizing PV cells, transitioning prototypes to commercial products, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. A PhD in a related field and strong hands-on microfabrication experience are required. This full-time position is not remote and involves working at local academic cleanrooms.
Mesodyne is a startup commercializing compact and lightweight thermophotovoltaic generators. The company's innovative LightCell technology, originating from MIT research, offers efficient, silent, reliable, and long-endurance power from any fuel source. This lightweight and compact technology utilizes combustion to heat a nanophotonic emitter, which drives spectrally matched photovoltaic (PV) cells, providing over a 10x improvement in endurance compared to batteries and internal combustion engines. Committed to the industrial and defense sectors, Mesodyne has existing contracts and numerous upcoming business opportunities for its LightCell technology.

Mesodyne is seeking a highly motivated Photovoltaics Engineer. This role will be central to the development of cutting-edge low-bandgap InGaAs PV cells and the transition of Mesodyne's innovative LightCell technology to its first commercial product.

Responsibilities
• Own the design, fabrication, integration, testing, and optimization of PV cells in the LightCell.
• Develop new PV cell designs including lattice mismatched with an optimized bandgap, back contacted, multijunction, etc.
• Work towards productization by transitioning from prototype to scalable, manufacturable designs.
• * Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to build prototypes for deployment in government and commercial pilot projects.

Qualifications
• PhD in electrical engineering, material science, physics/applied physics, or a related field with a focus on semiconductor devices.
• A working understanding of PV cell physics and behavior. An understanding of PV cell modeling and simulation is desired but not required. Prior experience with III-V materials for thermophotovoltaics, concentrator, multijunction, space or other high performance PV devices is particularly relevant.
• Strong hands-on microfabrication experience is required, including metalization, etching, lithography and thin film deposition. Must be capable of working at local academic cleanrooms.
• Hands-on PV electrical and optical characterization experience by methods such as IV, EQE, reflectance, Hall, CV, and TLM is required.
• Knowledge of III-V epitaxial growth is desirable but not required.

Location

This position is based at our facility in Somerville, MA and will require working at local academic cleanrooms.

Join Mesodyne and be part of a pioneering company at the forefront of power generation technology. If you are a motivated self-starter ready to embrace challenges in a dynamic startup environment, we encourage you to apply. If you are passionate about innovation, have expertise in III-V photovoltaics, and possess strong hands-on skills, we invite you to apply today.
