By joining the Division of Forestry, Madisonville Branch, Section I as a Forester I in Graves County, you will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to ensuring the programmatic integrity of numerous forestry- related programs, and the consistent delivery of services to the public. During the performance of your assigned duties, you will interact on a daily and weekly basis with not only the public, but with branch personnel, branch management, and the division’s program staff.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
• Preparing forest management plans for landowners.
• Conducting timber stand improvements.
• Providing technical assistance for cost share programs.
• Performing forestry education and public outreach.
• Participating in wildland fire management and related activities.

Skills and Expectations include, but are not limited to the following:
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of forest management.
• Ability to plan and direct forest management activities.
• Ability to work independently.
• Effective communication, organization, and documentation skills.
• Proficient knowledge and use of information technology.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in forestry.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver’s license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possess and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed outdoors on private forest lands. Work can be under adverse conditions due to weather, topography, or when suppressing wild land fires. Adverse conditions could be present when assisting in all-risk emergency response when mobilized. Work also involves frequent contact with citizens and organizations in the promotion of forestry programs. Duties are typically performed within the Commonwealth of Kentucky; however, some functions may occur in other states.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
