Chestnut Carbon is hiring a Forest Technician in Dubuque, IA, to collect forest carbon inventory data and engage with landowners. The role involves fieldwork in various terrains, potential travel, and occasional camping. Candidates should have a high school diploma, tree identification skills, and a valid driver's license. This part-time contract position offers flexible work and compensation based on the number of plots surveyed.

As part of our growing team, you'll be instrumental in collecting essential forest carbon data and making a positive impact on the environment.
We're seeking a motivated Forest Technician to join our team on a contract basis, with the potential for long-term opportunities. As a Forest Technician, your primary responsibility will be to collect forest carbon inventory data using our innovative, user-friendly smartphone device. You'll have the opportunity to explore local forests and may even travel to nearby states for exciting fieldwork.
What You'll Do:
• Travel to designated forest property sites, engage with landowners and ensure accurate data collection.
• Inventory and Data Collection: Document and photograph trees within assigned plots and create essential data that helps landowners access the carbon market.
• Fieldwork: Hike through diverse terrains, including wetlands, heavy brush, and dense forests.
• Collaboration: Work closely with remote staff in Minnesota, reporting regularly on your progress and any questions or concerns.
• Occasional Camping: Depending on the project, overnight camping may be required (details provided in advance).
You'll be equipped with all the necessary tools for success, including training and access to our smartphone-based inventory system. If you love exploring the outdoors and gaining real-life field experience, this is the perfect role for you!

Required Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license and personal vehicle.
• Medical and auto insurance (required by state law).
• Tree identification expertise.
• Strong communication skills.
• Proficient in smartphone technology, GPS, and digital cameras.
• Backcountry or wilderness experience (hiking, camping, etc.)
• Willingness to work in varied and rugged conditions, including steep terrain and wetlands.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Comfortable troubleshooting tech issues in the field.
• Interest in ecosystem conservation or natural resources.
• Progress toward a degree in forestry or environmental science.
• Wilderness First Responder Certification or firefighting experience a plus!
Compensation + Logistics:
• Per Plot Pay: Technicians earn between $22-40 per plot, based on terrain, project size, and remoteness. Projects can vary between 10 and 50 plots.
• Mileage Reimbursement: All mileage-related travel is reimbursed at the IRS Standard Mileage Rate.
• Flexible, Part-Time Role: This is a contract position with fluctuating work availability, perfect for supplementing income. It's ideal for students looking to gain valuable experience in the field or those seeking seasonal temporary work.
• Work Requirements: Reliable vehicle for travel is essential. Camping equipment and backcountry experience may be needed depending on the project.
$22 - $40 one-time
paid per plot
