Job Description
The Fleet Safety Advisor at Green Infrastructure Partners in Ottawa, ON, will ensure compliance with safety legislation and company policies for drivers. Responsibilities include training, conducting audits, performing collision investigations, and developing training content. The role requires a post-secondary education, a clean driver’s license, and involves extensive travel. The advisor will liaise between various teams to enhance safe driving practices and compliance.
Reporting to the Director, Fleet Safety, the Fleet Safety Advisor will support the Team by providing boots-on-the-ground CVOR Compliance & Education, supporting operations and liaising between the Fleet Operations Team, Corporate HSE Team and Operations Teams.
Primary Scope of Role
• Ensure drivers adhere to all Safety legislation and company policies.
• Re-train current drivers either proactively or in a remedial corrective action fashion to help reinforce policies and procedures that will enhance their safe driving skills.
• Carry out early morning proactive yard visits and audit drivers’ documentation and required safety items to ensure compliance.
• Conduct site and shop audits to ensure all required documentation that relates to drivers, vehicles and maintenance is up to date and meets all CVOR requirements.
• Provide detailed reports on assessments, trends, competency measurements, and re-certifications as appropriate and/or requested.
• Conduct adequate on-scene and tabletop collision investigations and write reports for all major vehicle collisions.
• Develop and maintain all Fleet Safety related training content.
Specific Duties
• Act as the main point of contact for CVOR, Provincial Highway Traffic Acts, Regulations, Federal Law and GIP Policies and Procedures as they relate to Transportation Safety.
• Train employees with previous commercial vehicle driving experience to drive the vehicle and/or combination in a safe and acceptable manner according to GIP’s Policies and Procedures, Laws, Regulations, Industry accepted standards and MTO/DOT regulatory requirements.
• Conduct pre-hire driver evaluations to determine competencies
• Organize and instruct classroom theory and hands-on practical courses including but not limited to: Defensive Driving Closed Course, Cargo Securement, Safe Backing, Pre-Trip Inspections, Electronic Logs.
• Conduct field observations or ride-a-longs with written assessments/feedback/re-certification to the driver and management.
• Monitor drivers Hours of Service on GeoTab Drive ELD system and conduct coaching moments to both drivers and operations to reduce violations.
Position Requirements
• Post Secondary Education.
• On Call Availability
• AZ or DZ Driver’s License with a Clean CVOR and Drivers Abstract.
• Ability to operate and teach on a manual transmission vehicle.
• Extensive overnight travel on a regular basis.
• Ability to drive long distances on a regular basis.
• Extensive knowledge of CVOR, HTA, TDG, NSC Standards.
• Well-developed computer skills, including using Excel to create charts & graphs and Power Point for course and presentation creation.
• Experience with GeoTab GPS would be considered an asset.
• Strong ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to seek clarification when unsure.
