The State of Montana is seeking a Fisheries Technician 5 in Kalispell, MT. Responsibilities include project coordination, data collection, fieldwork, and analysis under biologist supervision. Special Information:

Job Duties:
• Project Coordination, data collection and management, analysis, and field work, under the direction of the biologist and fish manager.
• Based on goals developed by biologist and fisheries managers, the technician formulates yearly and daily work plans to collect scientific data associated with fisheries projects using established protocol guidelines. Establishes sampling sites and oversees methods for monitoring water temperature and quality, and other habitat parameters. The technician determines logistics based on the requirements of the work of needs of the project and when necessary, evaluates the situation to determine the best approach for data collection and reports survey finds to the biologist and fish manager. Surveys fish populations in the field and through creel surveys for game and non-game fish to estimate the condition of population and individual fish species. Measure discharge to establish minimum flows necessary to sustain fisheries. Eradicates undesirable fish populations by chemicals and other means. Sorts, identifies, counts, aquatic organisms to assess aquatic diversity and food habits using basic laboratory protocols. Calculates population estimates; monitors growth and mortality rats related to stocking or natural reproduction. Maintains proficiency as a fisheries professional through continued education and training.
• Enters, summarizes, analyzes, and ensures quality control of ecological/biological data to assist in making management decisions and creating reports. Creates Fisheries data sets and maintains computer databases and up to date summaries.
• Directs and coordinates the purchase, maintenance, repair, assembly, and testing of a variety of field equipment such as boats, outboard motos, electroshockers, nets, and specialized fisheries survey and inventory equipment. Operates equipment such as electrofishing fear, jet boars, four-wheel drive vehicle, and ATVs and trains filed crew on safe equipment operation
• May supervise and train permanent and seasonal fieldworkers, interns, and volunteers in fisheries management, sampling skills, equipment operation and maintenance, laboratory techniques, safety, and division policy. Serves on hiring committees; helps to prepare performance appraisal; assist with time rolls, and scheduling.
• Represent FWP in public meetings, management actions, and public outreach
• Division and Department representation during certain times when management action or reporting of fisheries work is necessary to federal, state, and local governments or the public. Professionally represents Montana FWP on project coordination and actions to include landowners, anglers, University personnel, National Park Service personnel, Federal land managers, state and local governments, FWP staff, the media, or the public. Performs public outreach and education.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
The knowledge, Skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in fish biology, fish and wildlife management, ecology, biology, and three years of progressive job-related experience or work closely related to fish and wildlife biology. Combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
