Description

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is hiring a Fisheries Technician to support the Streams program, based out of the Porter Office. Working under the direction of a Fisheries Biologist, the technician will assist with ecologically driven research and management of Oklahoma’s stream fish populations.

This full-time role involves stream sport fish sampling, gear maintenance, and data analysis. It offers hands-on work in diverse environments, requiring interaction with landowners, data processing, and use of field and lab equipment. Ideal candidates will have experience in fisheries, fieldwork, and handling aquatic gear, as well as the flexibility to travel for extended fieldwork during sampling seasons.

Responsibilities
• Conduct stream fish population and community surveys
• Use electrofishing and netting gear to sample fish
• Communicate with landowners for access and technical coordination
• Remove otoliths, identify specimens, and enter/validate data
• Perform fish culture duties including feeding, pond fertilization, and fish transport
• Maintain and construct field and hatchery equipment
• Assist with project planning, budgeting, and technical reports
• Provide public outreach through media or speaking engagements
• Operate and maintain boats, ATVs, sampling tools, firearms, welding gear, and lab equipment
• Work in remote locations and outdoor conditions, including overnight stays

Minimum Requirements
• Associate degree or minimum two years of college coursework in Aquatic Resource Management or related field
• OR four years’ experience in a Fisheries Conservation Technician role (in lieu of education)
• One year of related experience (may be waived with a completed bachelor’s degree)
• Must be able to lift/push/pull 50 lbs and work in rugged, outdoor environments
• Ability to swim, work independently in remote areas, and handle wildlife
• Effective communication skills for public engagement
• Proficiency in operating field and lab equipment and personal computers
• Valid transcript required for application

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management with aquatic emphasis preferred
• Experience with fisheries management, hatchery operations, or technical fieldwork

Additional Notes
• Weekly overnight travel may be required during sampling seasons
• Candidates must be willing to work extended hours, weekends, and endure outdoor extremes
