The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife seeks a Hatchery Manager to lead fish culture and facility operations at the Minto and Marion Forks hatcheries. This senior-level role offers housing and the opportunity to directly impact fish production programs while managing staff, budgets, and site maintenance.

Description

As Hatchery Manager, you will oversee two medium-sized hatcheries in Oregon’s scenic wilderness. Responsibilities include staff supervision, fish culture operations, water system management, and administrative oversight. You will play a pivotal role in supporting fish production goals set by fisheries management, ensuring safe and efficient hatchery performance while advancing the agency’s conservation mission.

Responsibilities
• Manage and operate Minto and Marion Forks hatcheries
• Oversee fish culture activities to meet production goals
• Supervise a team of six staff
• Develop and implement hatchery-specific procedures and operating policies
• Plan and administer budgets and fiscal operations
• Coordinate maintenance of water systems, buildings, and hatchery grounds
• Promote affirmative action, safety, and environmental compliance initiatives
• Prepare technical reports and ensure recordkeeping accuracy

Minimum Requirements

Option 1: Associate degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture, or Aquarium Science + 5 years 6 months of fish culture experience
Option 2: Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science or similar + 4 years of fish culture experience
Option 3: 7 years of fish culture experience
All options must include:
• At least 2 years of lead work or supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications
• Hands-on hatchery experience in fish production and culture
• Experience developing and enforcing protocols and procedures
• Budget planning and administrative experience
• Strong report-writing and documentation skills
• Experience in personnel management and team leadership

• Salary range is for non-PERS employees; PERS-qualified employees earn 6.95% more
