Job Description

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is hiring 2 Seasonal Aids for the Fillmore Hatchery in Ventura County, CA. This role involves outdoor work in fish hatchery maintenance, requiring physical stamina and a passion for wildlife conservation. Candidates must be able to follow directions, maintain records, and operate equipment. The position demands flexibility in scheduling, including weekends and holidays, and involves working in various weather conditions.

The Inland Deserts Region Fisheries program is seeking to hire 2 Seasonal Aids to assist with daily tasks and duties associated with the maintenance of Fillmore Hatchery. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on, career-building experience in Hatchery maintenance and raising and caring for fish.

Requirements

Knowledge and Abilities:

Ability to: Read and write and speak English at a level required for successful performance; follow oral and written directions; maintain simple records@ do simple mathematical computations; do simple construction tasks with tools; interact successfully with the public; compute fees and make change; operate boats, and other equipment; learn to identify a variety of animal and plant species; perform routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Special Personal Characteristics:

Demonstrated knowledge of, interest in, and aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation and repair and maintenance work; willingness to live and work throughout the State; willingness to work unusual hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; willingness to perform varied manual tasks; willingness to work in adverse weather conditions; willingness to wear a prescribed uniform.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Ability to elevate 40 pounds and be capable of handling 50-pound feed and salt bags; get in and out of 4- foot raceways; willingness to work in and around water; work in all the weather conditions- wind, rain, extreme heat, cold, and direct sunlight; climb steep banks when necessary; work near waters with uneven terrain and unpredictable flow; ability to climb ladders; open and close various types of valves. A valid Driver’s License is required. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, work on weekends and holiday schedules.
