Job Description
Terracon Consultants is seeking a Field Scientist in Las Vegas, NV. The role involves conducting species assessments, wetland delineation, and NEPA document preparation, while collaborating with various teams across the southwest U.S. Candidates should have a relevant degree and at least seven years of experience in biology and environmental permitting. Responsibilities include project management, client interaction, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
As a Project Ecologist/Biologist, you will work closely with senior personnel across the region to deliver threatened and endangered species assessments (e.g., habitat assessments and avian and wildlife surveying/monitoring), wetland delineation and permitting support, and support NEPA environmental document preparation (e.g., Categorical Exclusions and Environmental Assessments). In this role, you may coordinate with NEPA practitioners and other specialists to deliver multidisciplinary work products for clients. This is a growth opportunity within the rapidly growing Environmental Planning Practice at Terracon, as we expand the practice within our established southwest operation. General Responsibilities:
• Interact with clients and contribute to projects across the southwest, including work in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico
• Prepare proposals, including scope of work and fee, for existing and new clients.
• Work with an existing environmental team to deliver work products and consulting solutions for clients.
• Work proactively with account managers from our National Client Account Program for successful, timely, project delivery in the southwest.
• Collaborate with department managers and environmental staff in our west coast offices as well as our Rocky Mountain Division.
• Manage the success of the key project metrics of on-time delivery, project billing and accounts receivable, as well as project profitability.
• Employ best practices for risk management and loss prevention. Be familiar with company risk policies.
• Lead safety efforts for project field team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines
• Possess strong understanding of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
• Possess skills to become Subject Matter Expert (SME) in one of more environmental/technical areas.
• Understand and implement technical requirements to complete client projects by directing and supervising field staff to survey, monitor and collect data and/or document site activities.
• Perform site visits, field observations and field data collection in area of technical expertise.
• Monitor project compliance for Mojave Desert Tortoise as a USFWS Authorized Biologist
Responsibilities may also include, but are not limited to, preparing statements of qualifications and proposals, identifying new opportunities for professional services, and authoring technical reports. Candidates will be expected to maintain professional relationships with regulatory personnel, prospective clients and/or other natural resource professionals.
Requirements for the position
Ideal candidates will demonstrate the following requirements:
• Bachelor's and/or master's degree(s) in Botany, Biology, Ecology, or other relevant field of study.
• Minimum of seven (7) years of related or applicable experience in biology, project management and environmental permitting.
• Understanding of, and/or committed willingness to learn, Federal, State, and local environmental regulations and permitting requirements (e.g., Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, local & state requirements)
• Proficiency in use of GIS and Microsoft Office software, including electronic document preparation is desirable.
• Holding certifications and/or species-specific permits such as 10(a) scientific study permits for one or more species is desirable.
• Proficiency in delineating Waters of the U.S., including wetlands is desirable.
• Experience with solar and transmission line projects as well as commercial projects and data centers is desirable.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.
• Experience to be approved as a USFWS Authorized Desert Tortoise Biologist in Nevada and/or California.
