Job Description
The City of Aurora is seeking a Facilities Energy Management Engineer to oversee energy management and sustainability efforts for city buildings. Responsibilities include project management, energy audits, policy development, and collaboration with architects and engineers. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 5 years of engineering experience. Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook is required.
Performs energy management and facilities construction/ renovation program development for all City buildings/ facilities. Leads City-wide energy conservation and sustainability efforts. Assignments provide opportunity for the application of independent judgment and initiative in the design of facilities projects including mechanical, electrical and structural systems for energy efficiency and comfort and in recommending or specifying modifications to existing systems. Works under the direction of the Design & Construction Supervisor.Oversees establishing policies and objectives for energy management and energy conservation projects, including planning, development, and implementation; performs program development; meets with City tenants and Facility managers in developing a scope of work for renovation and new construction projects; prepares and presents reports on operations pertaining to energy conservation efforts; serves as project manager, overseeing construction and energy conservation related projects; oversees the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program for City buildings; reviews project plans and specifications for conformance with Division directions and provides review comments to outside consultants; works with architects and engineers in the preparation of design drawings and specifications; reviews utility bills; constructs building utility usage profiles and analyzes them to determine energy usage trends and projected utility rates for City-wide budgeting purposes; negotiates and oversees the transport gas utility contract for the City; conducts detailed energy audits of City facilities and makes recommendations for appropriate energy conservation measures; uses Energy Star Program techniques to assess buildings for efficiency and cost savings; monitors the results of energy conservation projects; develops energy conservation projects and supporting budget requirements; oversees a City-wide Energy Awareness Program to encourage energy conservation among all City employees; develops City standards for new mechanical and electrical equipment purchases to improve energy efficiency; serves as a technical resource for in-house staff, consulting engineers, and project Managers, and craftsmen; troubleshoots building systems that are not operating properly; performs surveys, prepares drawings, and makes recommendations to solve building system problems; and performs other duties as assigned.Education: Bachelor's degree in facility management, facilities construction management, engineering, architecture or a related field.
Experience: At least 5 years progressively responsible experience in engineering. Experience with energy engineering preferred.
Knowledge: Knowledge of energy engineering principals including mechanical and electrical systems. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Abilities: Ability to construct spreadsheets using MS Excel; familiarity with MS Word and Outlook; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; establish and fulfill goals and objectives; read construction drawings; negotiate and enforce contracts; establish priorities; familiarity with AutoCad or similar computerized drafting program desirable.
Skills: Keyboarding; Strong interpersonal skills.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
Engineer in Training (EIT) certification. Professional Engineer (PE) license or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) preferred. LEED (Leadership in Engineering and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, or certification obtained within 12 months of employment. Colorado Driver License with a good driving history.Physical Demands: Light physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds; occasional lifting and carrying; some walking and standing; vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents; hand/ eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard; foot/ eye coordination for operation of motor vehicle for field inspections; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
Work Environment: Works primarily indoors with some outdoor work to perform field inspections; some exposure to noise and dust.
Equipment Used: Standard business and professional tools and equipment including computers and motor vehicles.
