About the position

Norfolk State University's Facilities Management Department is seeking applications for the Director of Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management. This position is responsible for consulting, directing, and managing the University's Environmental Health and Safety Programs and environmental compliance activities. The Director will oversee the implementation of a comprehensive and effective Environmental Health and Safety Program that encompasses various areas, including hazardous waste management, hazardous radiological, biological and chemical substances, lasers, asbestos, infectious waste, general safety, drivers safety, boiler expectations, risk management, and other state loss prevention programs applicable to the university. Additionally, the role involves maintaining records of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). The Director will plan, schedule, and conduct environmental health and safety compliance audits to ensure regulatory compliance with state, local, and federal laws governing environmental, occupational, health, and safety standards. This includes initiating corrective action measures in areas of noncompliance with environmental monitoring programs related to drinking water, wastewater, air emissions, and designated protected areas. A key responsibility is to provide a safe work and learning environment for the campus community by offering advice, training materials, and technical assistance to various departments, students, and employees to promote safe working and living conditions and healthy work practices to reduce University losses. The position also requires establishing and implementing short- and long-term goals, objectives, policies, and procedures while evaluating operational effectiveness and making necessary changes for improvement in Environmental Health and Safety and Risk Management. The Director will collaborate with Human Resources to develop and implement employee injury prevention strategies and assess program effectiveness. Furthermore, the role involves collecting, analyzing, and preparing health and safety management information and statistical data necessary for planning and decision-making purposes and for report generation. The Director will provide oversight to third-party vendors for the removal and disposal of hazardous, renewal, or biological waste, ensuring compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act very small quantity generator status. Finally, the Director will confer and advise with Executive Management, University staff, and departments on environmental health, safety, loss prevention, and risk management policies and procedures, as well as issues related to campus safety. The review of applications will begin on August 15, 2023.

Requirements
• B.S. Degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related field.

• Minimum of five (5) years' experience in environmental health, safety, risk management, and loss prevention programs.
,
• Two or more years of supervisory experience in a related field.
,
• Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and policies.
,
• Ability to prepare Excel spreadsheets and communicate effectively in writing and orally.
,
• Valid Virginia State driver's license with a good driving record.

Nice-to-haves
• Master's degree in a related field is desirable.
