The Central Land Council is offering a Cadetship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students in Alice Springs, NT, Australia. This program provides paid work experience aligned with their studies, including financial support for study-related expenses and return airfares for placements. Cadets will receive mentoring and participate in departmental tasks while completing their academic requirements. Applicants must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate degree.

OUR STORY

The Land Council (CLC) is a corporate Commonwealth entity established under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. The CLC represents traditional landowners, native title holders and other Aboriginal people in the southern half of the Northern Territory—an area of almost 780,000 square kilometres.

The CLC provides its constituents with advice, advocacy and practical assistance to support their aspirations, manage their land and realise and protect their rights.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Central Land Council Cadetship Program offers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students a unique opportunity to gain paid work and professional experience while pursuing an undergraduate degree that aligns to the work of Land Council.

Cadets will work under the guidance of departmental managers during the academic year and participate in 12 weeks of work placement annually. The program provides financial support, including airfares to and from placements, book allowances, and other assistance to support cadets throughout their studies.

Work plans specific to each cadet’s discipline will be developed and shared upon acceptance into the program.

Cadets will also receive ongoing mentoring and coaching throughout their participation.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
• Perform tasks within the scope of practice and defined parameters set by the position description and work plan developed by the departmental manager.
• Attend orientation and debrief sessions with the Organisational Development Team or Departmental Manager as needed.
• Participate in performance evaluations as directed by the Organisational Development Team or Departmental Manager.
• Successfully complete all academic and practical requirements for your degree while employed as a cadet.
• Follow established standards and procedures relevant to the work of the Land Council.
• Adhere to organisational goals and KPIs.
• Contribute to daily operations by completing administrative tasks as required by the Department Manager.
• Undertake administrative duties related to the departmental section’s work.
• Actively participate in professional and multidisciplinary meetings, conferences, and other departmental or remote meetings as needed.
• Contribute to quality improvement or research projects within departmental sections as directed.
• Engage in ongoing training and development activities.
• Provide the Organisational Development Team with formal enrolment details at the start of each semester, including units of study.
• Submit academic progress details, including transcripts, to the Organisational Development Team each semester and as requested.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
• Full-time enrolment in the first undergraduate degree relevant to the work of the Land Council.
• Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which you reside.

DESIRABLE:
• Knowledge of the context in which the Land Council operates.
• Understanding of Aboriginal society and culture, including contemporary issues. Familiarity with Aboriginal communities in Central Australia is highly regarded.
• A current driver’s licence.

• Rental assistance if you live interstate and have rental accommodation at your study location.
• Return economy airfares to Alice Springs for each work placement (minimum two-week periods).
• A one-time reimbursement of up to $2,000 for study-related equipment or programs (upon submission of receipts).
• Payment of up to $500 for textbooks required for enrolled units each semester (paid upon provision of a quote or receipt).

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
• Ochre card (working with vulnerable people check)
• National police clearance
