Pay Range:

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The position (K0227143)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has an Epidemiologist Series opening in Topeka. This position is with the Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics but will provide epidemiological support to various programs within the Bureau of Family Health.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Serves as team leader in assessment and monitoring of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) status to identify and address problems and for priority setting, planning and policy development. Develops frameworks, methodologies, and tools for standardized MCH data. Implements population-specific accountability for MCH components of data systems. Leads the development and conduct of epidemiological studies for program planning or to address important and practical MCH public health problems. Conducts advanced descriptive and comprehensive analyses of primary and secondary epidemiological data related to MCH (e.g., PRAMS, BRFSS, YRBS, live birth, fetal death, abortion, linked live birth/infant death date, etc.), interprets, and prepares reports to address state and local specific knowledge-based gaps and trend information for use in policy and program development. Mobilizes community partnerships between policymakers, health care providers, families, the public, and others to identify and solve MCH related problems. Actively promotes the use of scientific knowledge base in development, evaluation, and allocation of resources for MCH policies, services, and programs. Work with senior staff to advise public health officials on control and prevention strategies. Provide data and information concerning corrective actions or programs, and propose practices or policies on such data and information that will promote and protect public health.

Qualifications
• Education:
• Master’s of Public Health or other Master's program related to public health and epidemiology.
• Licensing & Certification:
• Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
• Minimum Qualifications:
• Epidemiologist
• Master’s of Public Health or other Master's program related to public health and epidemiology.
• Advanced Epidemiologist
• Master’s of Public Health or other Master's program related to public health and epidemiology.
• 4 years of experience in epidemiology.
• Preferred Qualifications:
• PhD in Epidemiology or related field.
• 3+ years of independent work experience as a MCH epidemiologist.
• Three or more years of independent work as an applied epidemiologist.
• work experience in a public health related organization, preferably in MCH area.
• Experience in research, scientific writing, data collection and analysis, manipulation of complex data.
• Can demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving.
• Experience working in a team environment successfully.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Professionalism and a good work ethic.
• Statistical software: Advanced knowledge of SAS or Stata.
• Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
• Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
• Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
• Certificate of training in specialty area of MCH epidemiology.
