Position Overview:
As a member of the New Gold Rainy River team, the Environmental Technician demonstrates commitment and compliance with company Health & Safety, Environment and Social Responsibility policies and procedures. The Environmental Technician also takes action to ensure that unsafe practices or non-compliant behaviors do not occur. The Environmental Technician will support the environmental department with compliance monitoring programs.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct compliance sampling and monitoring (effluent, surface and ground water quality, ambient air quality, noise, water flow using stream gauging equipment, water levels, soil or vegetation samples and HCN when required) as instructed by lead technician or environmental specialist.
• Collect flow and water level data, develop rating curves and maintain records and logs.
• Coordinate hydrometric station maintenance.
• Document field observations or readings, and or downloading data from various pieces of equipment in an outdoor setting in accordance with established procedures.
• Help with the maintenance and calibration of field instruments, monitoring instruments and testing equipment
• Develop or update relevant Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs) that support site operations requirements incorporating regulatory and license conditions as needed.
• Conduct analyses of field samples using on-site portable analyzers and meters.
• Processing, packing and shipping collected samples as required.
• Perform environmental inspections and identify areas that may be or are out of compliance with permits/regulations.
• Assist with management of onsite laboratory including housekeeping and organizing supplies.
• Assist in organizing and maintaining field safety gear, sampling equipment and various environmental field equipment including boats, motors, all-terrain vehicles, tools and wildlife collection kits.
• Support environmental site contractors.
• Use knowledge of environmental procedures, techniques and regulations to complete tasks.
• Operate department equipment including snow machines, boats, ice augers, all terrain vehicles.
• Participate and assist in waste management, spill clean-up/audits, reclamation and implementing sediment and erosion controls.
• Perform data entry in EQuIS.
• Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports.
Qualifications:
• Degree or diploma in environmental technician or related discipline.
• BSc in applied sciences preferred.
• 2+ years demonstrated environmental field experience working in a mine or industrial site
• Demonstrable experience with water and effluent monitoring, sampling and field level analytical techniques.
• Handling and experience in the safe use of hand or power tools, including augers is an asset.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft office suite.
• Knowledgeable user of EQuIS preferred.
• Good understanding of mining and milling processes and their environmental effects.
• Possess valid Class 5 driver's license.
• Able to hike several kilometers on uneven ground.
• Self-starter who can anticipate needs and work independently with minimal supervision.
• Good communication skills, both orally and written.
