The Ak-Chin Indian Community is hiring an Environmental Technician in Arizona to support the Environmental Programs Manager. Responsibilities include conducting research, environmental outreach, and compliance assistance. Candidates need a high school diploma or GED, two years of relevant experience, and a valid Arizona Driver's License. The role involves travel (10% of the time) and requires technical skills in various environmental media and maintenance of equipment.
The Environmental Technician at Ak-Chin Indian Community in Arizona supports the Environmental Programs Manager by maintaining the reservation's environment and natural resources. Responsibilities include conducting research, environmental outreach, and assisting with environmental compliance. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, two years of relevant experience, technical skills, and a valid Arizona Driver's License. Travel is required approximately 10% of the time.
Under direct supervision of the Environmental Programs Manager, the Environmental Technician performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work to maintain and protect the Ak-Chin Indian Community's (ACIC) reservation environment and natural resources. This position will also conduct complex technical research and analysis, environmental outreach and other environmental program work to assist the ACIC Environmental Protection Program in providing environmental protection.
High School diploma or GED and a minimum of two (2) years work experience in an environmental, natural resource or wildlife management field; or a combination of training and experience to meet the requirements of the position. Must possess technical skills to interact with staff to assist them with the installation and troubleshooting of equipment. Must be willing and able to travel (approximately 10% of time). Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements. Must successfully complete a background check.
• Becomes cross-trained in a number of environmental media including: water quality, air quality and use of pesticides and herbicides; habitat restoration, re-vegetation and wetland issues; solid waste management and recycling; radon, asbestos, and lead based paint awareness; multi-media environmental education for the tribal community; and emergency response activities on reservation land.
• Conducts wash maintenance and invasive species removal using mechanical means (chainsaws, heavy equipment, etc.)
• Provides staff support for implementation of environmental programs and projects and tribal environmental regulations, codes and laws.
• Brings together information and resource data for the tribe in various areas of environmental media (water, land and air, etc.).
• Conducts research including environmental and habitat surveys, compiles and analyzes project data, and prepares technical reports on environmental issues affecting reservation lands.
• As assigned, collects samples and sends to laboratory for testing; records/logs test results.
• Performs routine maintenance of equipment.
• Coordinates with other Departments such as Sanitation; Maintenance; Planning and Capital Projects including planning and holding meetings.
• Takes necessary steps to restore normal operating conditions in the event of emergencies.
• Assists with environmental compliance reviews; reviews and issues environmental permits.
• Conducts environmental education & outreach, including preparing and presenting information at workshops and meetings on various environmental issues affecting the Ak-Chin Indian Community lands.
• Prepares and submits required reports.
• Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
• Knowledge of general environmental quality and health principles, practices, and procedures.
• Knowledge of research methodologies and data analysis.
• Knowledge of operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting monitoring/sampling equipment.
• Knowledge of tribal, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations.
• Must possess technical skills to interact with staff to assist them with the installation and troubleshooting of equipment
• Skill in operating and maintaining assigned equipment (mechanical and hand tools).
• Skill in understanding and following oral and written instructions.
• Skill and ability in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other Community employees and residents.
• Ability to learn general environmental survey principles, practices, and techniques.
• Ability to operate or learn to operate heavy equipment.
• Ability to maintain a variety of accurate files and records of departmental activities, inspections, and test results.
• Ability to write and prepare technical reports and related documents.
• Ability to use computer programs and software for maintaining database information, mapping information and spreadsheets.
• Ability to collect water, soil, and air samples and to maintain accurate sampling records and lab results.
• Ability to communicate both orally and in writing and demonstrated ability to express oneself in a clear and concise manner.
• Ability to work in various weather conditions throughout the year.
