Environmental Technician - Seasonal Full Time

Duka Environmental Services Ltd. is hiring a Seasonal Full-Time Environmental Technician in Whitehorse, YT, Canada. The role involves outdoor work in various habitats, focusing on monitoring water bodies and controlling mosquito populations. Applicants should be motivated Science students or recent graduates with strong communication skills. The position requires a valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, and completion of a Pesticide Applicators Certificate. The work season runs from April 21 to August 16, 2025.
Duka Environmental Services Ltd. is looking for physically fit, motivated Science students or recent graduates interested in working outdoors, in a wide variety of habitats and conditions. Routine visitation of ponds, marshes and other water bodies both temporary and permanent, is required to ensure the timely identification of developing insect populations and larval mosquito, collection and control.

Successful applicants will develop effective, and useful, field sampling and surveying skills as you work independently, and part of a larger team. Practical skills to be further developed include daily project planning, field data entry, activity recordkeeping, sample collection, preservation and labelling, electronic data (laptop, tablets) collection, GPS use/tracking of activities and while mapping of aquatic habitats.

Must have excellent communication skills and a friendly, enthusiastic disposition as there is a significant amount of interaction with the public, property owners and business operators.

Full-time work Season starts as early as 21 April 2025 and extends to 16 August 2025 (Tentative).

Primary Duties

- Regular visitation of ponds, marshes and other water bodies, both temporary and permanent.

- Schedule and organize daily activities to maximize program efficiency and efficacy.

- Maintain daily accurate and complete log of all activities, observations, interactions.

- Apply a granular, biological control product Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis to control larval mosquito infestations in standing water.

Field Requirements

- Must have valid driver’s license. N is okay. Please provide # of years safe driving.

- Must supply a reliable vehicle for use to complete field activities. There is no off-road driving.

- Pesticide Applicators Certificate issued by BCMOE. To be completed before field work starts in April. Self-study kit and materials are supplied. Certificate examination (1 hour) is open book using study kit. We will assist employee in reviewing materials and becoming certified.

- This is a field position which requires some flexibility of daily work hours. Typical shift 8:30-4:30

- Work is outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain.

- Responsible mature attitude, good work ethic and ability to work independently as required.

- Post-secondary education in biology, chemistry, ecology, resource management or related sciences.

- Entomology, plant identification and/or pesticide use experience an asset.

- Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Neat, well-groomed appearance. Physically fit.

Renumeration

- Work week averages 37.5 hours per week Salary $22/hour Paid 15th and 31st of month

- Reimbursement for personal vehicle use ($0.55/km) while completing work related duties will be provided. Cost for insurance upgrade (to business use) for work use provided.

- Expenses for work related duties will be reimbursed following submission of receipts and completed expenses account forms.
