About the position
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking an Environmental Supervisor to join the Division of Environmental Response and Revitalization (DERR). This position plays a crucial role in supervising the Hazardous Waste Permitting Section, ensuring that all permits, registrations, variances, and waivers are processed in a timely, consistent, and compliant manner with both state and federal regulations. The Environmental Supervisor will work closely with the program manager to plan, measure, and report on the effectiveness of the section's operations, as well as develop guidance and standard operating procedures to enhance efficiency and compliance. In this role, the supervisor will manage staff assignments and performance, promoting training and development opportunities for team members. The position also involves conducting interviews and making recommendations for new hires, ensuring that the team is equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively. As a subject matter expert, the Environmental Supervisor will represent the agency at various conferences, seminars, and public hearings related to hazardous waste management, providing technical support to the regulated community, constituents, and other governmental officials. The Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring the timely processing of hazardous waste permits and actions, assisting industry representatives and permit applicants in developing accurate and complete permits for their facilities, and managing staff performance while tracking program success metrics. This position is vital in providing technical guidance and outreach to the regulated community and interested parties, thereby contributing to the overall mission of the Ohio EPA to protect the environment and public health.
Responsibilities
• Supervise the activities of DERR's Hazardous Waste Permitting Section.
,
• Ensure timely and consistent processing of hazardous waste permits and actions.
,
• Assist industry representatives and permit applicants with the development of accurate and complete permits for facilities.
,
• Assist in the development of standard operating procedures for permitting actions.
,
• Manage staff performance and track program success metrics.
,
• Provide technical guidance and outreach to the regulated community and interested parties.
,
• Conduct interviews and make new-hire recommendations.
,
• Represent the agency at conferences, seminars, and public hearings regarding hazardous waste.
Requirements
• 5 years of training or 5 years of experience in a position involving engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, or other comparable science fields, evaluating and approving complex engineering design plans, conducting environmental surveillance activities, or environmental pollution compliance monitoring inspections.

• 6 months of training or 6 months of experience as a lead worker.

• Valid Ohio certificate of registration as a sanitarian or valid Ohio certificate as a sanitarian-in-training for positions in the solid waste program (excluding those in solid waste planning unit).

• 12 months of experience as Environmental Specialist 2, 85862, or equivalent qualifications.
