Environmental Steward (11-month service term)

About the position

Green Iowa AmeriCorps is part of the State/National branch of AmeriCorps, operating out of the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education. Founded in 2009, the program was established to address sustainable energy resource usage in Iowan communities recovering from the devastating floods of 2008. Since its inception, Green Iowa AmeriCorps has expanded its reach across the state, mobilizing AmeriCorps members to engage communities in environmental stewardship, neighborhood revitalization, and providing resources for energy efficiency services. Members are placed with partnered host sites in various communities, where they contribute to the mission of both Green Iowa AmeriCorps and the host organization. The Environmental Steward position is an 11-month service term that offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about environmental issues. Members will engage in a variety of activities, including residential energy audits, land and water management practices, conservation efforts, and sustainable agriculture initiatives. They will also focus on local food and environmental education, volunteer engagement, and the management of natural areas. The role includes restoring and preserving prairies, cleaning up waterways, and assisting with marketing and communications efforts. Members will serve as sustainability coordinators, implementing service learning projects and energy and waste reduction initiatives. This position provides hands-on experience working closely with government officials and community partners, as well as opportunities to learn technical skills related to climate action planning and greenhouse gas inventories. Members will also have the chance to plan and execute education and outreach projects on a community scale, enhancing their professional development and cultivating community relationships.
