Job Description

GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist 1 in Louisville, KY, to document environmental resources for energy projects and assist with regulatory compliance tasks. Responsibilities include field inspections, data collection, and report preparation. The role requires 4+ years of relevant experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a team. The position involves 90% fieldwork and requires travel, including overnight trips.
GAI Consultants is currently looking for an Environmental Specialist 1 to join the team. The Environmental Specialist’s primary work responsibility will be to conduct documentation of environmental resources for energy-related projects and associated regulatory permitting tasks but also provide support for storm water and other regulated waters compliance monitoring field assessments including erosion and sediment control inspection and storm water pollution prevention plan modification determination but may be tasked to assist on other environmental projects as needed. The individual will assist in the compilation of data and preparation of weekly reports and applicable permitting documents as directed by Task Managers and Project Managers.

Essential Duties:
• Complete construction inspections, erosion control monitoring, and environmental marking and staking
• Assist with field data collection and wetland delineations
• Gain knowledge of regulatory requirements and complete basic regulatory agency applications
• Receive technical training for career enhancement
• Other duties as assigned.

Experience Required
• 4+ years of experience commensurate with environmental consulting practices with a background in environmental science, ecology, or construction inspection services.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Must have the ability to function well within a multi-disciplinary work team.
• Work is expected to be approximately 90% field-based work and 10% office-based work. Must be willing to work flexible hours and overtime.
• Must be able to travel and work out of the office, including possible overnight trips. In-state travel is a requirement, and extended field assignments are possible. There may also be up to 15% out-of-state travel associated with this position on a project-specific basis or to assist other offices.
• To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and use of GPS tools.

Experience Preferred
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Knowledge and experience with erosion and sedimentation control monitoring and construction inspections on linear projects.
• Basic familiarity with the use of GPS tools.

Physical Requirements
• The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, or smell.
• The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
• The employee must wear Personal Protective Equipment, including a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, etc.
• The work environment will include indoor and outdoor settings.
• The employee must hike moderate distances through unimproved terrain, utility rights-of-way, in remote areas, etc.
• The physical demands and work characteristics described here represent those that an employee must meet to successfully perform this job's essential functions.

Travel Required

• Begins to demonstrate critical thinking skills, works on small projects or portions of larger projects; assist Task Managers with aspects of projects; proactively implements Quality Management System (QMS) for project deliverables.

Minimum Years of Experience
• 4+ Years Experience

Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences or similar field of study

Technical Responsibilities
• Working towards leading field studies and data collection; Generates well written, technically sound documents with little assistance from senior staff and requiring minor edits; Agency interface; Data analysis and interpretation; Acquires ability to research Federal, State, and local applicable environmental regulations and guidance and applies them to project specifics; extensive knowledge of wetland delineations; wetland restoration and wetland design; ecological field surveys; endangered species surveys (understand the requirements of the endangered species act, understand when and how to consult with these agencies, and have working knowledge of the species within the area we work), and duties as required; May become specialized within a specific discipline; receives technical training for career enhancement.

Project and Task Management
• Works as a part of a team and coordinates work with others.
• Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.

Management Responsibility
• Assigning and overseeing tasks under the direct supervision of the task manager and maintaining budgets and schedules; keeping very close communication with Task Managers; assisting Project Managers or Task Manager with proposal preparation; scopes of work and project component cost estimates.
• Guidance and oversight from Task Managers and Project Managers.
• No managerial responsibilities at this level.

Communication Skills
• Possess effective oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staffs; interact with clients with close oversight, interacts closely with Project Managers and various Department Managerial Staff, performs well with client communications.
