Job Description
The State of Missouri is hiring an Environmental Specialist in Springfield, MO, responsible for conducting inspections and environmental sampling, processing NPDES permits, and providing compliance assistance. Candidates should have attention to detail, customer service skills, and effective communication abilities. A bachelor's degree in environmental sciences or a related field is required, along with the ability to conduct site inspections. This position is not remote and is based at the Southwest Regional Office.

This position will be located at the Southwest Regional Office, 2040 West Woodland, Springfield, MO 65807.
• Schedule and conduct inspections and environmental sampling of NPDES permitted facilities in accordance with the department’s Standard Operating Procedures and the department’s Procedures for Assistance, Compliance, and Enforcement Manual.
• Review, process and issue general National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) operating permits and provide technical/compliance assistance relating to NPDES permitting.
• Provide compliance assistance to regulated entities, including coordinating with other state, federal, and local agencies.
• Respond to environmental concerns, environmental emergencies, and other special requests.

work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs,

available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
• Oral Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, consider the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
• Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
• Self-Management: Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative,
effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal
supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
• Adaptability: Adjusts planned work by gathering relevant information and critical thinking to address multiple demands and competing priorities in a changing environment.
• Ability to conduct site inspection over uneven and rough terrain while carrying up to 50 pounds.
• A valid Missouri State Driver’s License
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
• A bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, natural resources, physical sciences, or a closely related field, and 0 - 4 or more years of relevant experience.
