Job Description

REI Engineering, Inc. is hiring an Environmental Scientist in Wausau, WI, for an early-career position requiring at least two years of environmental consulting experience. RESPONSIBILITIES

Environmental Site Assessments & Due Diligence
• Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) in accordance with ASTM standards.
• Perform limited Phase II ESAs, including sampling and analysis, following ASTM protocols.
• Prepare comprehensive reports and documentation to support environmental due diligence efforts.

Field Investigations & Sampling
• Plan and execute fieldwork for environmental investigations, including scheduling and coordinating subcontractors.
• Collect soil, groundwater, surface water, and vapor samples using hydraulic push, hollow stem auger, and hand auger boring methods.
• Prepare soil and water samples for laboratory analysis based on project-specific parameters.

Data Management & Analysis
• Enter and organize field data into tables, maps, and technical reports for site characterization.
• Analyze and interpret environmental data to identify trends, data gaps, and project-specific implications.
• Create clear and accurate data visualizations, including graphs and figures, to support findings.

Project Execution & Communication
• Collaborate with internal teams to ensure all resources are in place for successful fieldwork execution.
• Oversee subcontractors during hydrogeological investigations and ensure adherence to project specifications.
• Communicate effectively with regulatory agencies and third parties regarding project schedules, compliance, and reporting requirements.

Technical Reporting & Documentation
• Draft technical reports, letters, and work plans that clearly convey findings and recommendations.
• Utilize internal databases to query site history, generate sampling reports, and maintain accurate project records.

Environmental Reporting

Support our Environmental Health and Safety team in the following areas:
• Environmental & Safety Audits
• Air Permit Compliance
• Hazardous Waste Compliance
• Storm Water Compliance
• Wastewater Discharge Compliance
• Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC)
• EPCRA Compliance (Tier II, Form R, etc.)

Emergency Spill Response

Work as part of the REI emergency spill response team. Respond to spills and conduct remediation follow up and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Soil Science, Geology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Engineering that meets the qualifications for a Scientist under Wisconsin Administrative Code (WAC) Chapter NR712
• Current 40-hour Hazardous Waste Site Worker (Hazwoper) Certification, or ability to obtain within 1 year
• Minimum of two years’ experience in environmental consulting or a related field
• Strong verbal and written skills with the ability to interact effectively with colleagues, clients and regulatory agencies
• Willingness to travel and perform fieldwork in a variety of environmental conditions
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check
• Familiarity with environmental regulations and compliance standards is a plus
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with GIS, CAD, and environmental software is a plus
• Self-motivated with a positive attitude and a strong commitment to continuous learning and professional development
