The Environmental Scientist I position at the City of San Diego involves performing various biological, chemical, and physical analyses for regulatory compliance and special studies. This role includes monitoring and reporting on water quality from various sources, assessing compliance with environmental regulations, and conducting fieldwork in diverse aquatic environments. The position requires a strong foundation in scientific principles and the ability to work with potentially hazardous materials.

Responsibilities
• Perform biological, chemical, physical, bacteriological, microbiological, molecular, bioaccumulation, and toxicological monitoring, analysis, and reporting for regulatory compliance.

• Collect, analyze, and interpret results from various water sources including drinking water, wastewater, and ocean water.

• Assist with assessing compliance with environmental regulations and permit requirements.

• Examine, identify, and enumerate aquatic plant and animal species.

• Conduct fieldwork in various aquatic environments, including lakes and oceans.

Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Oceanography, Zoology, Ocean Engineering, or a closely related field.

• One year of full-time professional-level experience in a scientific field, including laboratory work, regulatory compliance assessments, or fieldwork.

• Experience in biology, chemistry, marine biology, microbiology, molecular biology, or toxicology, performing relevant analyses and interpretations.

• Valid California Class C Driver License.

Nice-to-haves
• Experience with regulatory permits and compliance processes.

• Knowledge of quality systems and quality control practices.
