About the position

The Environmental Scientist position at the State of South Dakota involves providing environmental oversight for mineral development facilities. The role is part of the Minerals, Mining, and Superfund Program within the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR). The successful candidate will engage in regulatory policies to protect human health and the environment, conducting inspections, permitting, and data management related to mineral exploration and mining activities.

Responsibilities
• Conduct field inspections and oversee environmental field work.

• Prepare inspection reports and written correspondence.

• Utilize geographic information system (GIS) software and drone equipment.

• Prepare technical reports and file reviews.

• Review applications and report findings with recommendations.

• Write environmental permits.

• Analyze environmental and water quality data.

• Perform or review statistical analyses for data interpretation.

• Collect environmental samples, measurements, and information.

• Obtain and maintain 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification.

• Obtain and maintain Federal Aviation Administration drone pilot licensure.

• Provide technical information and assistance to colleagues and the public.

Requirements
• Valid driver's license is required.
