The mission of the Kentucky Energy & Environment Cabinet (EEC) is to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians by protecting our land, air, and water resources by utilizing our natural resources in an environmentally conscientious manner. We do this by helping families connect with nature and preserving the Commonwealth’s natural heritage; and by supporting innovative, resilient, and sustainable energy solutions that together bring economic benefit to the commonwealth.

By joining the Division of Enforcement/Environmental Assistance Branch an Environmental Scientist I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to lead the branch’s environmental outreach initiatives and develop educational or training resources.

Holders of the Environmental Scientist I position will complete tasks such as:
• Develop, coordinate, and support environmental educational events and online learning opportunities.
• Create and maintain environmental educational materials including training manuals, fact sheets, website resources, and videos.
• Publicize events and resources through social media and other web-based platforms.
• Collaborate with environmental education centers and advisory committees to disseminate programs, materials, and information across Kentucky.
• Serve as an environmental education advisor at sessions at events, meetings, conferences, and stakeholder gatherings.
• Provide customer service when answering the environmental hotline.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
• A passion for the environmental sciences, outreach, and public engagement.
• Strong writing and editing skills for educational and informational materials.
• Ability to develop creative and effective outreach strategies using social media and digital tools.
• Skill in building and maintaining partnerships with agencies, organizations, and the public.
• Ability to learn technical skills independently and execute tasks with minimal supervision.
Additional Position Information
• Occasional in-state or out-of-state travel required for events, trainings, and meetings.
• Work may involve standing for presentations, transporting educational materials, and occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
• Office work will involve extended periods of sitting, computer use, and phone communication.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
