About the position

The City of Virginia Beach is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join the Public Works Engineering team. This professional-level position focuses on stormwater pollution prevention and compliance with the City's Stormwater Discharge Permit (MS4 Permit). The role involves implementing environmental training, conducting water quality monitoring, and engaging in public education and outreach to protect local waterways.

Responsibilities
• Support education of city staff on stormwater pollution identification, reporting, and prevention activities by coordinating and tracking various trainings, developing presentations and training, and leading training sessions.

• Perform water quality sampling and monitoring of discharges to the City's stormwater system and surface waters and data analysis.
,
• Work independently and/or with the assistance of internal and external partners to implement the public education and outreach program.
,
• Support data management related to water quality.
,
• Conduct field assessments and investigations.
,
• Manage projects and contracts.
,
• Prepare technical reports.
,
• Facilitate and attend public education and outreach activities, including developing and distributing educational materials, making public presentations, and creating and leading training sessions.

• Coordinate and implement the City's Storm Drain Marking Program along with other similar initiatives.
,
• Assist with preparation of the MS4 Permit Annual Report.
,
• Explain stormwater related codes, ordinances, standards, and other requirements to residents.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, biology, natural resources, or a similarly related degree.

• Two (2) years of experience in a similar field or any combination of education and experience equivalent to six (6) years of environmental compliance experience.

• Current and valid driver's license.

Benefits
• Full-time position with a salary range of $61,011.10 - $94,567.21 depending on qualifications.
