Suburban Consulting Engineers, Inc. is seeking a full-time Environmental Scientist specializing in wetlands and natural resources in Mt Olive, NJ. The role involves conducting wetland delineations, species evaluations, and preparing permit applications. Candidates should have strong ecological knowledge, technical writing skills, and the ability to manage project tasks. Fieldwork is required locally, and experience with AutoCAD is a plus. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential.
Title: Environmental Scientist (Wetlands, Natural Resources, and Permitting)

Status: Full-time

Reports to: Environmental Permitting Manager

Location: NJ Based (Flanders, New Jersey)

Brief Description:

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in ecology, wetland science, and environmental regulations, along with proven technical writing skills. This position involves working closely with other Environmental Scientists and the Permitting Manager to conduct wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species evaluations and surveys, and prepare permit applications for agencies such as NJDEP, NYSDEC, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE).

A general understanding and willingness to learn federal and state environmental regulations is required. These regulations include the Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act, Flood Hazard Area Control Act, Coastal Zone Management Rules, Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act, and the Pinelands Protection Act. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to manage project tasks efficiently in a fast-paced work environment. Experience with AutoCAD is a plus.

SCE provides employees with access to company vehicles for fieldwork activities. This position will require occasional travel to conduct wetland delineations and other environmental surveys, with most fieldwork taking place locally. The successful candidate must demonstrate sound judgment in managing typical field hazards, be prepared to work in challenging weather and terrain conditions and consistently meet project deadlines.

Examples of work/duties:
• Assist with planning and conducting wetland delineations under supervision;
• Draft technical reports with clear, concise, and accurate scientific writing;
• Apply critical thinking to develop regulatory solutions for client needs;
• Track and organize project tasks in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment;
• Accompany the Permitting Manager on threatened and endangered species surveys;
• Prepare state and federal land use permit applications and monitor associated project tasks;
• Develop permitting plans using AutoCAD;
• Assist in the preparation and design of ecological restoration plans and technical reports;
• Support project execution by ensuring adherence to scope, budget, quality standards, and GES health and safety requirements;
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor;
• Provide support for additional office and field assignments as needed;

Minimum Qualifications (education, licensing, certifications, etc.):
• Technical writing skills;
• Interest in Career Development, motivated and highly responsive.
• Critical thinking and problem solving capabilities;
• Strong organizational skills for managing multiple project tasks, maintaining accurate field notes and records, and ensuring timely completion of reports and permit applications;
• A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field;
• The ability to perform field work locally;
• Continued education and training showing competency and willingness to learn in the field of wetland science, ecology, ecological restoration, or wildlife biology;
• Must have the demonstrated ability to conduct field work and write quality reports with minimal-to-moderate supervision.
• Must possess excellent communication, teamwork, analytical, organizational, technical writing, and client service skills.
