Job Description
FMF Pandion is seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist focused on Zero Waste in Los Angeles, CA. Responsibilities include conducting waste analyses, compliance inspections, and outreach related to California's waste legislation. The role involves data intake, report preparation, and fieldwork, including lifting heavy objects and using tools. Training will be provided, and applicants must have a valid driver's license and be able to work throughout Southern California.
FMF Pandion is a small business that provides Environmental Consulting and Civil Engineering services. This position will focus on Zero Waste Consulting and secondarily support other environmental consulting projects Including storm event water quality sampling. This is an entry level position. Training will be provided.
Primary job duty will involve conducting education and outreach related to California's waste and recycling legislation, including Assembly Bill 341, Assembly Bill 1826, and Senate Bill 1383. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Conducting visual waste analyses.
• Performing contamination assessments.
• Conducting edible food and compliance inspections.
• Assisting with Zero Waste program implementation.
• Providing customer training and technical assistance.
Additionally, staff will be expected to intake data using compliance tracking software, analyze data, and prepare reports as needed.
PRIMARY LOCATION
Primary duties will be conducted within the City of Los Angeles boundaries.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct waste analyses to identify disposal habits and opportunities to improve waste diversion programs.
• Conduct inspections of edible food generators and food recovery organizations/services to assess compliance with Senate Bill 1383 edible food recovery requirements.
• Make compliance determinations and provide education on local and statewide waste regulations.
• Conduct waste contamination assessments.
• Assist businesses and multi-family complexes with the implementation of recycling, organics, and food donation programs.
• Provide logistical account support including, but not limited to: setting up contracts and overseeing accounts; increasing/decreasing service; identifying problem areas; determining container types, sizes, frequency and locations; establishing collection schedules; and identifying employee training needs
• Handle client communications, conflict resolution, and compliance on client deliverables.
• Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
• Participate in public education and outreach activities.
• Provide field observation notes for company reports, presentations, and social media outreach.
• Troubleshoot logistical and operational challenges.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Able to work storm events from October 1st to April 30th each year with little to no restriction.
• Able to lift manholes and other heavy objects such as bags of concrete (>50 lbs.) repeatedly during a field day.
• Able to use general hand tools (hammer, screwdriver, wrench, etc.).
• Willing and able to learn to use power tools (hammer drill, saws-all, chain saw).
• Willing and able to learn light construction methods to install monitoring stations.
• Willing to complete confined space training course (company paid) and enter confined spaces per OSHA protocol. You should not be claustrophobic for this position.
• Able to work throughout Southern California, occasionally up to one week remotely away from home (rarely).
• Own a Truck or SUV and willing to use it for field work.
• Ability to learn to use scientific sampling equipment such as flow meters, automated samplers, sondes, water quality meters, remote telemetry systems and such.
• Okay with working alone in generally safe areas.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Valid driver’s license. Generally clean driving record.
• Ability to pass drug screen.
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental related field preferred.
• Ability to effectively manage client relationships.
• Bilingual a plus.
• Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Physical ability to walk in the field for extended periods of time to visit customers
• Interact effectively with individuals from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
• Zero Waste experience or training a plus
• Ability to park a company vehicle at your residence a plus

• Proficient with MS Word and Excel.
