Why does the job exist?

This purpose of this position is to provide support as an advanced regulatory compliance specialist to promote adherence to all applicable state and department laws, rules/ policies/ and procedures. This position provides senior-level regulatory compliance expertise to improve oversight of hazardous waste generators and permitted hazardous waste management facilities.
How does it get done?
• Conduct hazardous waste facility inspections and compliance evaluation inspections to meet environmental protection agency work plan commitments
• Provide technical assistance and compliance support to facilities and the public
• Investigate environmental complaints and oversee hazardous waste cleanups from spills
• Review inspection reports, enforcement documents, and maintain policies, procedures, and guidance documents
• Assist in compliance and enforcement efforts, including rule adoption and authorization coordination
• Mentor less experienced staff and support inspection-related activities
• Prepare inspection reports and documentation in accordance with policies and procedures
• Complete required technical and regulatory training

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and five (5) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Moderate physical work will be performed during the execution of field inspections and incident responses in all weather conditions including standing, walking, hiking, bending, reaching and lifting. There is also potential exposure to various hazardous materials and conditions during field investigations.
