About the position

The Environmental Scientist will be a key member of the Division of Environmental Planning and Engineering at Caltrans District 5 in San Luis Obispo, CA. This position is crucial for leading environmental efforts on Project Development Teams, focusing on the delivery of transportation projects throughout the San Luis Obispo Area. The incumbent will play a significant role in identifying strategies to avoid and minimize environmental impacts while contributing to enhancements within the State Highway System. Under the general direction of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the Environmental Scientist will plan and execute complex environmental studies necessary for project delivery. This includes gathering, researching, and analyzing social, natural, and environmental data to prepare, review, and process environmental documents, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. The role may require occasional overtime, travel, and overnight stays, emphasizing the need for flexibility and adaptability in various work environments. A valid driver's license is desired as the position may involve operating state-owned or leased vehicles. The Environmental Scientist will also be responsible for ensuring that all methods of appointment are considered, including list appointment, transfer, reinstatement, surplus, SROA, and re-employment. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the classification to be eligible for appointment, and their applications must clearly demonstrate how their experience aligns with these qualifications. Additionally, eligibility for hire may be determined by the candidate's score on the Environmental Scientist exam, which is a prerequisite for those new to state civil service employment.
