The Government of Saskatchewan is hiring an Environmental Protection Officer to implement environmental protection programs in Saskatchewan. Responsibilities include reviewing documents for environmentally impacted sites, preparing approvals for hazardous waste operations, conducting inspections, and developing environmental policies. The ideal candidate should have a background in engineering or science, experience with environmental assessments, and knowledge of relevant legislation. 11.The Environmental Protection Branch of the Ministry of Environment is seeking a multi-talented individual with a strong engineering and/or science background as Environmental Protection Officer to deliver results-based environmental protection programs throughout the province of Saskatchewan.

The Opportunity The Environmental Protection Branch of the Ministry of Environment is seeking a multi-talented individual with a strong engineering and/or science background as Environmental Protection Officer to deliver results-based environmental protection programs throughout the province of Saskatchewan.

As an Environmental Protection Officer in the Environmental Protection Branch, you will be responsible for:
Reviewing and commenting on all required document submissions regarding management of environmentally impacted sites, as well as municipal, industrial and mining operations;

Reviewing applications and preparing approvals for the construction and operation of all components of storage and handling of hazardous substances waste dangerous goods, municipal, industrial and mining operations related to raw product handing, processing, waste management, air quality, waste industrial water treatment, and/or potable water treatment;

Reviewing environmental impact statements for proposed municipal, industrial and mining operations and provide technical review comments regarding these developments;

Performing environmental inspections to ensure compliance with provincial legislation, the Environmental Code, regulations and approvals;

Responding to and investigating spills of hazardous substances and waste dangerous goods and approve clean up;

Developing the Province’s environmental policies and regulations regarding environmentally impacted sites, as well as municipal, industrial and mining operations and their inherent environmental concerns; and Responding to public inquiries or complaints. Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will have the following:

Experience with assessment/decommissioning/reclamation of environmentally impacted areas;
In depth knowledge of environmental issues and environmental protection processes associated with municipal, industrial and mining operations, including treatment/storage of hazardous materials, spill response, air emissions, waste management;

Comprehensive knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, biology, geochemistry, water chemistry, and inorganic chemistry, relating to municipal and industrial applications and impacted site reclamation; and Knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, agreements, policies, guidelines, principles and processes relevant to environmental protection and compliance assurance including results-based regulation is also required. Typically, the competencies required for this position can be achieved through a degree in engineering or science combined with related environmental work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

You will have demonstrated ability to adhere to the values of the Saskatchewan Public Service.

The successful candidate for this position will be required to work towards becoming competent as an Environmental Emergencies Officer and participate in associated on-call shift rotations. This includes being able to respond and travel to discharge (spill) incidents on short notice.
