Cape Environmental Management is seeking an Environmental Project Scientist/Engineer for its Honolulu office. The role involves supporting environmental remediation projects, preparing technical documents, overseeing field operations, and collaborating with team members. Candidates should have a relevant degree, at least 3 years of experience, and strong communication skills. The position requires physical fieldwork and may consider relocation assistance for applicants not currently residing on Oahu.
About the position
Cape Environmental Management Inc (CAPE) is seeking a qualified Project Engineer/Geologist/Scientist to join our dynamic technical team at CAPE's Honolulu office. The ideal candidate will be experienced in environmental remediation, have strong technical writing and communication skills, and be knowledgeable in federal and state environmental regulations. This position will support senior-level technical staff and project managers in planning and implementing environmental projects in Hawaii, other Pacific islands, and the US west coast. CAPE's project scopes vary widely. Below are a few examples of recent projects: In-situ chemical oxidant injection and groundwater extraction; Excavation of contaminated soil and off-site disposal, including waste characterization, confirmation sampling, and waste management activities; Environmental and maintenance dredging, including bathymetric surveys, sediment dredging, MEC clearance, and waste management activities; Stormwater drainage channel restoration, including removal of contaminated soil and site revegetation; Rapid response for spill remediation. Applicants not currently residing on Oahu should express their intent and timeline to relocate. Relocation assistance will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Responsibilities
• Preparation of technical planning documents (work plan, sampling and analysis plan, quality control plans, safety plans, etc.)
,
• Oversee and participate in field operations, including remediation activities, environmental monitoring, collection of samples for laboratory analysis or field screening, and waste management to ensure compliance with project objectives and regulatory standards
,
• Support with quality control and site safety duties
,
• Prepare technical reports and memorandums summarizing field activities, analytical results, and conclusions with clarity and precision
,
• Collaborate effectively with colleagues and others to achieve project goals and deliver high-quality results
,
• Active participation in CAPE's performance management process to support professional development and continuous learning
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, geology, environmental science, or related field
,
• Minimum of 3 years of work experience in environmental remediation, including technical report writing and field activities
,
• Professional licensing as required for position or able to obtain within 6 months of hire (EIT, PE, GIT, PG)
,
• OSHA 40hr HAZWOPER and annual 8hr refresher training
,
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
,
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
,
• Able to follow instructions and take responsibility for multiple assignments to meet deadlines
,
• Able to work independently with exceptional attention to detail
,
• Valid driver's license
,
• Able to pass background check for badging to access DOD installations
,
• Able to meet physical demands of fieldwork (e.g., wear respiratory protection, standing or walking on uneven terrain, and lift/carry up to 50 pounds)
Nice-to-haves
• Master's Degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or related field
,
• Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations and best practices (e.g., CERCLA, RCRA, Hawaii TGM, etc.)
,
• Experience working with NAVFAC, USACE, or other DOD agency
,
• Experience serving in a quality control and/or safety role
,
• Experience with GPS data collection and processing (e.g., Trimble, Field Maps, etc.)
,
• Industry standard trainings, such as: 8hr HAZWOPER Supervisor training, OSHA 30hr Construction training, Navy/USACE Construction Quality Manager training, RCRA HAZWASTE and DOT HAZMAT training
